There were a total of seven photos, and each photo had a girl in it.
The first four photos were taken of the girl and Frederic. They were taken under a cherry blossom tree, before a grand church, on a bridge, and on a Ferris wheel. Both of them were wearing matching outfits and had sweet smiles.
The last two photos, however, were filled with sadness. Those two photos were selfies of the girl crying. There was blood on her wrists.
The last photo was the most terrifying. In the photo, there was a dead body, presumably drowned. The body was completely soaked, covered in water plants, and the skin had turned pale from being soaked.
It took me several minutes to regain my consciousness, my voice trembling. I said, "Mom, who is she?"
"Have you ever seen someone who looks like her?" Evie asked me softly, posing another question.
I nodded. Yes, Emilia was exactly like a replica of this girl.
Evie put away the photo and sighed, "Syl, her name is Lillian Miller, she was a girl that Frederic used to like."
"Mom, please make it clear. What does this have to do with me?" I was starting to get a little impatient.
Under Evie's narration, I came to know that there were things about Frederic that I thought I knew enough about, but there were still things that I had no idea about.
That period of time happened to be close to graduation, and a few of us, including Greta, were doing internships outside. It was the only time I had been apart from Frederic for so long. I was in another city, so we could only find ways to chat online and come up with topics to talk about every day.
I remember it very clearly. Back then, Frederic changed the background photo of his Timeline, which he had never changed before, to a pink cartoon peach image.
For this, I had been worried for a long time, afraid that he had thoughts of betraying me.
Actually, my intuition at that time was not wrong. Frederic did meet Lillian during that period. She was the first girl who made him truly understand what love is.
Unlike before, when he would just play around with other women, he took his relationship with Lillian very seriously. However, their relationship faced opposition from his family.
Coincidentally, at that time Frederic's grandfather was seriously ill. Because he wanted to see Frederic get married, the Hudson family searched for a suitable candidate to marry Frederic. In the end, they thought I was the perfect fit.
When I found out that I was going to marry Frederic, I didn't even think twice and agreed. This also intensified the Hudson family's opposition toward Lillian.
"Mom, why didn't you tell me back then?" I asked.
"We strongly opposed Frederic and Lillian being together back then. We thought their relationship wouldn't last long, and that once he agreed to marry you, they would just end it. Who knew Lillian..." Evie sighed. There was a hint of guilt and regret in her eyes.
I finally understood why Frederic said so many harsh words to me on the night of our wedding. Every sentence he said felt like a knife stabbing my heart.
Also, he told me that he wanted me to regret marrying him and to suffer for the rest of my life.
Originally, the girl he liked jumped into the river and committed suicide on the day we got married.
"Syl," Evie's face turned pale. "I know it's not right to keep this from you, you should have the right to know. But at that time, we were in such a hurry, and when Lillian jumped into the river, you and Frederic had already had your wedding. It was too late for everything."
"Mom," my heart had already cooled down, with a somewhat sad smile. "I understand."
After saying that, I got up and grabbed my coat. "Please arrange for someone to take me back. I need some time to calm down."
Evie sighed helplessly. She said, "Syl, I'm telling you all this just hoping that you will reconsider divorcing Frederic. It was all our fault, your dad and I. We went too far back then. Frederic is also one of the victims."
"I knew." I didn't want to say much, so I just nodded.
Soon, Evie sent someone to take me back to Aroma City. Throughout the journey, I couldn't calm down, as my mind was filled with memories of the past.
Originally, Evie knew how Frederic treated me, but she refused to tell me what exactly happened, making me believe all along that it was my own inadequacy.
Originally, Frederic had a woman he liked. Lillian was his true love, while Emilia was just a substitute for Lillian.
